Portrait Process

A Portrait is typically a special, yet long process. It needs to be timeless, professional, and--most importantly--a good likeness. Although Natalie enjoys working with clients to create their idea of a perfect portrait, she encourages them to look around to make sure they have a good understanding of the styles and typical outcomes of several different portrait painters before settling on "the one." Visit the Testimonials page to see how Natalie's clients have felt about their portrait(s).

If Natalie is the right fit for your vision, she will host a brief interview to determine the basic direction you want the portrait to go. It is helpful to know where it will hang, what kind of background you have in mind, and what kind of mood you want to create. Then, once the Order Form is completed, the Terms and Conditions is signed, and the 30% down payment is received, you will secure a position on the waiting list.

Afterward, if possible, Natalie will schedule at least one (up to three) 2-hour live sittings, depending on what will be required for the design. She may also ask to borrow such items as clothing or background props to use for reference in the studio. If working from life not possible, a photo shoot will be arranged and Natalie will take all the reference photos she needs to execute the painting. This usually takes about 1 hour. See FAQs for additional details about photo references.

Portraits turn out best when Natalie is not working on a deadline. Sometimes, she will start completely over--more than once--to make sure it's perfect. If you have a special date by which you need the portrait completed, see FAQs for details of how Natalie typically meets the request.

Natalie welcomes feedback and wants to make sure you are happy. Once the portrait is approved, the remaining 70% is required prior to delivery. Then, simply frame, hang, and enjoy the portrait for generations to come!
